Frequently Asked Questions
regarding Mental Health

How do I prepare for my first session?

Take a moment to breathe deeply and unwind. During your initial session, your counselor will carefully review the informed consent process and offer essential guidelines for our counseling journey together. They will engage you in a comprehensive discussion about your life experiences and aspirations, fostering an environment where you can openly share your concerns and objectives for counseling. Feel free to bring along a list of any specific concerns or goals you wish to address during our sessions.

How long do I have to be in counseling?

The duration of counseling sessions is contingent upon individual circumstances and the extent of personal investment outside of scheduled appointments. Collaboratively, you and your counselor can establish a tailored timeline that aligns with your therapeutic objectives and progress.

What does a session look like?

Our counselors will collaborate with you to establish clear therapeutic goals, which will serve as the focal point of your sessions. Whether you prefer a structured approach or a more flexible format, our counseling sessions can be tailored to accommodate your preferences and the specific style of counseling that best suits your needs.

How long are the sessions?

Counseling sessions are 50-55 minutes. Longer sessions are available but will have to be discussed with your provider in advance. Note that insurance does not cover more than one appointment (37-59 minutes) per 24 hours, and any extra time will be billed at a self-pay rate.

What if my family member doesn't want to go to counseling?

Witnessing a loved one endure hardship can be an emotionally taxing experience. While we acknowledge that compelling individuals over the age of 18 to seek counseling is not within our purview, we invite you to explore our insightful blog post, which offers guidance on providing support to a cherished individual who may be hesitant to pursue counseling. You may find the resource enlightening and empowering. Please follow the provided link for further information.

What if I don't like my therapist, can I change them?

We advocate for open communication between our patients and providers regarding their services. Should you wish to explore alternative options, you are welcome to request a change of providers within our practice.

I am under 18, do my parents have to know what I am talking about in session?

For individuals under the age of 18, parental or caregiver consent is necessary to access our services. It's important to note that confidentiality is upheld except in cases where there is a risk of harm to the patient or others. You are encouraged to discuss any concerns or questions regarding confidentiality with your therapist, who will provide clarity and support on this matter.

How can I cancel my session?

Our online portal offers convenient options for scheduling, rescheduling, and canceling appointments. Alternatively, you may also reach out to us via phone or email for assistance. It's important to adhere to our cancellation policy, which states that cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance of your appointment incur no fee. However, cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time will result in a $50 fee. No-show or No Notify is a $75 cancellation fee.

How can I talk to my therapist outside of session?

As our counselors dedicate most of their working hours to conducting sessions, we encourage minimal communication outside of scheduled appointments. Should you have any inquiries, we kindly ask that you email us, and we will facilitate communication with your counselor on your behalf. Please note that response times from counselors may range from 3 to 4 days.

You take my insurance, how do I get an appointment and what will be the cost?

Kindly express your interest in receiving counseling services, specify your preferred provider, and provide details about your insurance coverage.

Example: "Hello (name) Lupe, I am interested in getting counseling for (general reason for seeking services) depression with (preferred provider) Sara and I have a (insurance name) BCBS. Could you please help? Thanks."

We will set up a free 15-minute consultation with your therapist (if they do not have a waitlist) and verify your benefits to give you the exact cost of your sessions. In the consultation, you can speak to the therapist about your unique needs and have the opportunity to ask questions. If both you and the therapist agree it's a good fit, the therapist will schedule you for your first appointment.

What if you don't take my insurance?

We can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. We would recommend calling your insurance for a list of providers that are in-network.
